《海外東經》記載，東方濱海之地流傳著水伯天吳的神話，是一則早期型態的水神神話，傳說在大荒的東方，有座朝陽之谷，為掌水之神。他是半人半神的怪物，有八個腦袋的臉孔，八隻腳，八條尾八，除了這蘊含豐富的想像之力，也表現出古人對大自然的敬畏之情。
